The eighth annual Senior Day sponsored by Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, in partnership with the Medina Community Recreation Center (MCRC), Cleveland Clinic Medina Hospital, and the Medina County Office for Older Adults (MCOOA), welcomed a huge crowd October 18 to the Center, 855 Weymouth Road, Medina.

The free event, which is geared to those 55 and better, offered numerous opportunities for members of the senior community that included receiving flu shots and other health screenings, and gathering valuable information regarding the many senior services that are available in the area.

In addition to answering questions individually, at least 45 vendors included enjoyable snacks, pens and other useful items, and fun raffles along with printed material that addressed many questions seniors typically have about: home health care, local medical sources, alternative living styles, travel experiences, legal information, local entertainment options, veterans services, religious affiliations, social groups, available transportation sources, and making final arrangements.

Complimentary McDonald's coffee and muffins were available in the cafeteria for anyone wanting to take a break between visits to all the vendor's stations. The first 300 guests received insulated grocery bags, handy for carrying all the hand-outs.

The Medina Community Recreation Center is "dedicated to fostering an atmosphere that supports, motivates and encourages participants in the pursuit of lifelong health and wellness." It promotes exercising your body, educating your mind, and making new friends. To that end, MCRC offers various activities that appeal to countless tastes, whether it is playing pickleball, chess, or WII bowling, or doing needlework.

MCRC also hosts a 55+ Guest Lecture Series on most Fridays. On October 25, Dr. Gregory Heins, Cleveland Clinic Cardiologist, will discuss and sort out the the numbers patients get from doctors. Lunch will be provided by Life Care Center of Medina.

The November 1 meeting will feature Senior Feud!, a friendly Family Feud-style game. All feuders will enjoy root beer floats provided by SSSN Client Services Committee, plus have lunch provided by Brookdale Senior Living Medina North and South.

AARP Fraud Protection Specialist, Richelle Deacon, will speak at the November 15 meeting, teaching guests ways to protect themselves from falling prey to fraud. Danbury Senior Living will provide lunch for that meeting.

The Friday lecture series are from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. For additional information, please contact Nancy Johnson, MCRC Senior Program Coordinator, at, or call 330-721-6934.
